5 STUDY SKILLS THAT ACCELERATE YOUR LEARNING
5 STUDY SKILLS TO ACCELERATE YOUR LEARNING
If you’re tired of spending hours and hours looking at your books and seemingly not learning anything, put these study skills to the test and your studying sessions will be a lot shorter and much more effective.
Ø 1- Elaborative interrogation (Asking “Why”)
Asking yourself “Why?” is a very efficient way of learning. It encourages you to integrate new information with what you already know, activating your mind.
Ø 2- Self-Explanation
If you periodically stop your reading and explain to yourself what it means you get a pretty good idea of your understanding level. Is everything clear? You may find that you might need to look back over parts of the text to fully understand what’s being said.
Ø 3- Practice testing
Train and exercise your mind to always be ready to search for facts with your long-term memory. Doing so makes the answer easier to find each time.
Ø 4- Distributed Practice
Organize your time and do small but frequent study sessions. Doing so, you have to restart your memory for the topic during each study session. Once your memory for the topic is warmed up and moving, doing more is fairly easy.
Ø 5- Interleaved Practice
The reasoning behind this skill is to study related concepts in parallel. The reason why interleaved practice works is that you’re mixing up several areas creating a different approach to solve the problem. This makes your mind work faster and it boosts your learning.
